Clean-up Just in Time for Another Storm

Two trees hit this Shoreline home off 8th Ave today. Tree crews are busier than ever. They tell me they expect tonight and tomorrow to be the worst.

Storm knocks out power to thousands

It took 10 men more than 12 hours to restore power back to everyone in Shoreline.

KOMO reporter Melody Mendez spent Thursday morning at Meridian Avenue North, which utility crews closed late last night due to fallen trees and debris.

The storms were so strong, they yanked a huge fir tree down onto a woman's car as she drove along Meridian (pictured above).

The woman was o-k - but the tree didn't stop there. It pulled down power lines, breaking a power pole and knocking out power to thousands.

And this may be just the beginning.

The KOMO weather team is predicting another round of strong winds tonight.

So crews are gearing up for more long hours on the job.

"Hopefully (we can) get everybody back in, take a break, go home, take a little time off, see our families and get ready to do it again, said Marshall Jensen with Seattle City Light.

Mudslide shuts down Amtrak service

KOMO's Air 4 helicopter flew over a mudslide just south of Richmond Beach Park Tuesday morning.

The slide is covering the Northbound Burlington Northern Rail Line.

A federal rule requires Amtrak passenger trains to wait 48 hours after a landslide before continuing rail service.

Alternate transportation will be provided by chartered motor coaches between Seattle and Vancouver.

Shorecrest YouTube video gains popularity

As of Tuesday morning, almost 20,000 people had clicked on Shorecrest's YouTube production of "Hey Ya" by Outkast.

When we first told you about the class project-turned-internet-hit last week - only a fraction of that number had seen it. And we still thought it was a lot.

But the music video just continues to gain momentum.

Evening Magazine and the Seattle PI Blog both ran stories about it yesterday.

And how's this for a cherry on top -

Shorecrest Alum (and star of The Office) Rainn Wilson gave the video a shout out on his twitter account. Followed by some fightin' words for rival HS Shorewood.

New school levy proposals on the table

The Shoreline School Board is considering three proposals to be placed on a special election ballot in February:

A four-year replacement educational programs, maintenance and operations levy
The levy averages $22 million per year for each of the four years, 2011 through 2014. The maintenance and operations levy, which replaces the four-year levy passed by voters in 2006, would provide the district with about 20 percent of its general operating budget.

A $150 million bond for the modernization and replacement of Shorecrest and Shorewood High Schools
The 2006 bond approved by voters included funds for the planning and design for the two high school projects, but not for the actual construction costs.

A four-year capital levy for technology support
This levy would support the District's instructional technology program and services and technology equipment replacement.

Bail for suspect in Friday's fire set at $1 million

The man arrested blocks from Friday's massive fire on Aurora had his bail set at $1 million on Saturday.

Kevin Swalwell made his first court appearance on Saturday.  A judge set Swalwell's next hearing for Tuesday.

Swalwell was arrested a few blocks from the massive fire that destroyed an empty furniture store on the 16900 block of Aurora.  He is also the main suspect in as many as 17 arsons in the Greenwood neighborhood in northwest Seattle over the past couple of months.  The fire on Aurora was also declared an arson.

Records show Swalwell has a lengthy criminal record, including two previous convictions for arson in 1995. Other felonies on his record include burglary, theft and possession of a controlled substance.

For the 2nd straight year, King's bring home 1A volleyball title

Make it two state titles in a row for the King's Knights, who beat Chelan Friday night to take the state 1A volleyball title in Yakima.

The Knights have now won nine state tourney games in a row, dating back to their 3rd place finish in 2007.

King's lost the first game to the Goats, but roared back to take the final three games and the title.  The scores were 21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-20.

That first game was the only game the Knights lost in the entire tournament.  They had defeated Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls), Lynden Christian and Cascade (Leavenworth) in straight games to make the finals.
