Teen girl killed, young man wounded in Shoreline shooting

SHORELINE, Wash. -- A 17-year-old girl was fatally shot and an 18-year-old man was critically wounded when someone opened fire on their car early Wednesday.

The shooting happened about 12:30 a.m. in an apartment building parking lot in the 300 block of NW Richmond Beach Road.

As officers were rushing to the scene, they got a 911 call from the young man who had been shot saying he and the female victim were driving to the Shoreline Police Department.

Police stopped the vehicle near the intersection of 185th and Aurora, where medics arrived to take both of the shooting victims to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The girl died at the hospital and the man was taken into surgery in critical condition.

Both had been shot multiple times and officials said the car they were in was riddled with bullet holes.

The girl was a student at Shorecrest High School and the boy attends Shorewood, according to Shoreline Public Schools Superintendent Sue Walker.

Taiwanese group offers reward in year-old death Shoreline cyclist

Taiwanese group offers reward in year-old death Shoreline cyclist

The Taiwanese Association of Greater Seattle is offering a $6,000 reward for information resulting in arrest in the death of Michael Wang, a Shoreline resident who was killed in a hit-and-run while bicycling home from work last July.

“Our organization was saddened by Michael’s death,” association board member John Chou said in a press release. “We just wanted to do something to bring awareness to the case and generate leads.”

The Taiwanese Association of Greater Seattle set a goal of $2,000 for the reward but tripled that with donations from its members and people of Taiwanese descent around the country, according to the Seattle Police Department.

Wang, whose father is a member of the association, was riding north in the bike lane along Dexter Avenue North after leaving work in South Lake Union. According to a witness, an SUV hit Wang when it tried to turn left from Dexter onto Thomas Street.

Police are continuing to investigate the case. Anyone with information can call Det. Bacon at 206.684.8932.

Tonight: T-Birds to host Sealth in state boys soccer playoffs

Tonight: T-Birds to host Sealth in state boys soccer playoffs

The undefeated Shorewood Thunderbirds start what they hope is a run to a state boys soccer title tonight at Shoreline Stadium.

The T-Birds will take on Chief Sealth in the first round of the tournament. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.

This is the first trip to the playoffs in four years for Shorewood. In their last appearance in 2008, as a 4A school, they beat Thomas Jefferson in a shootout before losing in the quarterfinals to Todd Beamer in an amazing 15-14 shootout.

It has been a long time since Shorewood won a state title in boys soccer. Their one crown was won in 1978 in the old AAA (now 4A) classification, with a 2nd place finish in 1980. Their one trophy as a 3A (formerly AA) school was in 1987, when they finished fourth.

This is the first trip to the state tournament for the Seahawks, who play in the Metro League.

The winner of tonight's game hosts the winner of the Bainbridge/Hazen game on Saturday.

Woman accused of murdering ex-boyfriend pleads not guilty

SEATTLE -- A woman who prosecutors say fatally stabbed her ex-boyfriend before kidnapping his children pleaded not guilty on Tuesday.

Doreen Starrish, 28, cried as the second-degree murder charge was read in King County Superior Court.

Investigators say Starrish attacked Aaron Smith during an argument on May 3 at a home in Shoreline.

Smith, 27, was stabbed in the chest during the attack and later died at a Seattle hospital.

After the stabbing, Starrish allegedly drove off with their 7- and 3-year-old daughters. An Amber Alert was issued and the children were found safe a few hours later at a relative's house.

Starrish was on the run for several days but eventually turned herself in at the King County Jail on May 6.

Starrish and Smith had a troubled past, according to investigators. Court records show Smith had a history of assault, including an alleged attack on Starrish last August in which he's accused of hitting her legs while she slept on the couch.

Volunteers build ramp for Shoreline woman

Volunteers build ramp for Shoreline woman

A Shoreline woman has a new ramp to use to get in and out of her home, thanks to volunteers who built it on Saturday.

The volunteers, from the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish County, built the ramp for Jan Lunak as part of their Rampathon event. That's where contractors and builders volunteer to build ramps for people who need them to get in and out of their homes.

Lunak, who has multiple sclerosis, said that she wasn't able to get her power wheelchair outside and even had trouble getting her walker down the step at her door.

Over 20 people turned out for the build, and by time they were done on Saturday afternoon, Lunak finally had a ramp she could use to get in and out of her home. The volunteers were led by Joseph Irons of Iron Brothers Construction, while materials were donated by Home Depot and Plywood Supply.

Chase, Holcomb, Utter running for vacant 1st Congressional seat

Chase, Holcomb, Utter running for vacant 1st Congressional seat

The special election for Jay Inslee's former seat in Congress finally has its first candidates.

Carin Chase announced on Tuesday that she will be running for the seat in the "old" 1st Congressional District that Inslee vacated to run for governor. The daughter of State Sen. Maralyn Chase, she is currently the chair of the 32nd District Democrats.

A Bainbridge Island man, J. Byron Holcomb, has also filed to run for the seat. He is a lawyer on the island, which will no longer be a part of the district after January. He will also run as a Democrat. Another Democrat, former Lynnwood City Council member Lisa Utter, is collecting signatures so she can be put on the ballot, as well.

She is running to finish Inslee's term in Congress. Whomever wins the special election for Inslee's seat will only serve for a month, as redistricting has created a new 1st Congressional District. Many of the cities that will vote in the special election for Inslee's seat, including Lynnwood, Edmonds, Shoreline, Poulsbo and Mukilteo, will be in new congressional districts for 2013.

In a statement, Chase said that the important thing was that Inslee's seat stay in his party.
