Free wood debris recycling at the Shoreline Transfer Center this weekend

Those who need to get rid of damaged trees or wood debris from last week's storms have a place where they can recycle them for free.

The Shoreline Transfer Center will be taking wood debris from the storms free of charge (for anyone who lives in King County) this weekend between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. The facility will also be taking debris the following weekend (February 4-5).

The free service is seen as an important step in the clean-up process by members of the King County Council.

“The recent winter storms downed trees and branches, leaving significant debris in their wake,” said Councilmember Bob Ferguson, whose district includes Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. “Waiving the fee for storm-related debris at the Shoreline Transfer Station will assist north end residents who are cleaning up after the storms.”

The center is accepting stumps, logs and limbs no longer than six feet in length. They are not taking brush, leaves, grass clipping, sod or soil.

Briarcrest ES on alert after man approaches student at bus stop

Parents of Briarcrest Elementary School students received a letter from the school principal on Wednesday after a student was approached by an unknown man on her way to a bus stop.

Jonathan Nessan send the letter home with students after the incident, where a girl was on her way to a bus stop at NE 175th Street and 18th Court NE when the man came up to her. She immediately ran back home and told her parents, who then called police.

The man was described by the girl as a white male between 35-40 with dark brown hair, cut in a crew-cut style. His car was a medium-sized blue four-door sedan with a dent on the rear door on the driver's side. Hanging from the rear-view mirror was a pair of green dice with black numbers on them.

Anyone who sees this car is asked to contact Shoreline Police.

Here's the text of the letter Nessan sent out to Briarcrest parents:

HEEBotics Red takes 1st at regional FLL tourney

HEEBotics Red takes 1st at regional FLL tourney

Some of the best robotic and scientific minds in the region are in Shoreline, and they proved it last week, just before the snows arrived.

The Home Education Exchange HEEBotics Red team took the Champions Award at the Western Washington First Lego League tournament at Inglemoor High School in Kenmore on January 15. They beat out over 50 other teams from throughout western Washington for the award.

Their winning project had to do with lettuce, how it gets contaminated and what steps should be done to prevent the contamination. They produced a video on their website explaining their project.

That presentation shown in the video also helped them win the Presentation Award at the FLL event.

Also winning awards at the FLL event was the HEEBotics Blue team, which took home the Robot Strategy and Innovation Award at the event.

Homeless count to take place early Friday

Shoreline will be one of a number of locations around King County where volunteers will be counting the city's homeless population early Friday morning.

The "One Night Count" will be conducted by the Seattle/King County Coalition on Homelessness. The count will be taking place early Friday morning, not just in Shoreline, but in Auburn, Bellevue, Federal Way, Kent, Renton and various locations in Seattle. The volunteers are teamed up with members of the SKCCH to count in shelters, buses and other locations where the homeless may be. This will be the 33rd year of the count, which helps the SKCCH determine the scope of their campaigns for the coming year.

People who are interested in volunteering or want to know more about the One Night Count can contact SKCCH for more information.

Deadline for Parks guide cover contest is Friday

Deadline for Parks guide cover contest is Friday

Would you like to see your photo on the cover of the Spring/Summer Recreation Guide and have everyone in Shoreline admire your work?

You have just a few days to get that photo in for the "Choose the Cover" contest. The city's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department is taking photos through Friday at 5 p.m., with the finalists being voted on from February 1-17 on the city's Facebook page. The winner gets announced on the Shoreline Facebook page on February 22.

So, how do you submit your photo? You can submit it online on the city's website or you can mail it to the parks department via City Hall.

If you have questions on the contest, you can contact Sheryle Harp at 206-801-2623 or at sharp@shorelinewa.gov.

Then, when the guides come out, maybe you can point to the cover and brag that it's your photo that everyone is seeing.
