World Concern to provide cash for work to help Haiti rebuild

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Friday, March 12th, 06:27pm

When the president of World Concern left Shoreline to support his traumatized team in quake-ravaged Haiti, Dave Eller realized the destruction is so vast it will take years to rebuild lives.

"Haiti was a devastation level (we) haven't seen before," he said. "They've lost everything. Many families have nothing; no home, no job, what they did for work is lost."

Viewers have already donated tens of thousands to Haiti relief, which helped provide food, water and shelter in the emergency phase of survival. Now World Concern is starting Cash for Work -- work that brings dignity.

"Instead of a handout, get people engaged in their own recovery," Eller said.

The average wage in Haiti is $2 a day. The northwest-based nonprofit is paying Haitians $5 a day to remove rubble.

"There's millions of tons of concrete rubble in city of Port au Prince that needs to be removed before lives can be put back together," Eller said.

We presented another check for $6,200 from KOMO viewers to help with the relief efforts, and your donations will now go to work helping Haitians get back to work.

Reyes sentenced to over 21 years in shooting death of 7-Eleven clerk

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Friday, March 12th, 06:23pm

A family's pain and tears spilled out in the courtroom on Friday as a killer was sentenced to prison for the cold-blooded murder of a store clerk.

Julian Reyes of Shoreline has been sentenced to 21½ years in prison in the shooting death of Ho Viet Ton, a 7-Eleven clerk.

Store surveillance video captured Reyes buying a Slurpee at the store on NE 165th and 5th Avenue NE on the night of Dec. 10, 2006. Ton, 49, is seen helping him pay with pennies from the counter dish.

High on cocaine, Reyes, then 19, walked up to that same clerk sitting outside, and shot him in the head, investigators said.

"If I had a chance, I would choose places with him carry that burden myself also," said Reyes in court.

Ton's family filled the courtroom and recalled the generous man who escaped Vietnam, but lost half of his family. Ton, they said, was a man happy to work the graveyard shift seven nights a week.

Shorecrest girls lose in quarterfinals

Submitted by Heather Reese on Friday, March 12th, 03:08pm

It was a heckuva run for the Shorecrest girls, who made their first ever appearance at the Washington Class 3A girls state tournament.

However, they couldn't stop Cleveland from beating them 65-52 in the quarterfinals Thursday night.

The Eagles jumped out to a 17-11 lead after the first quarter and were never threatened after that.

Cleveland (20-7) meets Mercer Island in Friday's semifinals. Shorecrest will play Kennedy Catholic in the consolation bracket Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Sentencing for Shoreline convenience store killing

Submitted by Associated Press on Friday, March 12th, 12:24pm

King County prosecutors are asking for a 23-year prison term when Julian Eduardo Reyes is sentenced Friday in superior court in Kent for killing a convenience store clerk.

Reyes pleaded guilty in October to second-degree murder in the 2006 shooting of 49-year-old Ho Ton at a store in Shoreline.

Customers found his body on the sidewalk in front of the 7-Eleven where he worked the night shift.

"Extreme home makeover" of sorts for Shoreline residents

Submitted by Heather Reese on Wednesday, March 10th, 12:16pm

Rebuilding Together Seattle (RTS) will partner with 40 volunteers from Wells Fargo Advisors on Saturday to "transform" a Shoreline home in just one day.

RTS is an organization that provides low-income homes and non-profit facilities with critical repairs, modifications and energy-efficient upgrades at no cost to the owners.

Earlier this year, RTS - with the help of Parkview Services - identified a home on 3rd Ave NW that is in desperate need of a full yard clean-up, ramp construction and gutter cleaning.

And - voila! Help is on the way.
